Paper (canoe) Birch(Betula papyrifers bs)
Known for its amazing fall golden color this landscape tree grows best in moist soil. It has tremendous winter interest for its beauty and grows to 70 feet. The paper birch is easily recognized for its peeling white bark, which actually did find historical use as a paper substitute. An alternate common name for the tree is canoe birch. The bark, which can be peeled in large wide strips, was valued for construction of canoes. Paper birch is a tree of the north woods, very cold tolerant, with most of its range in the northern United States and in Canada . Our guests loved these favors. We did herb seed for our Fall Wedding and they were a colossal hit. I wasn't sure whether to do seeds but the basil seed was perfect , something green, and useful and with lots of life!
